UNDERSTANDING DANDRUFF

The scalp is no different than the rest of our skin: the epidermis renews itself regularly by shedding superficial cells without our noticing.

Dandruff flakes are scales, superficial cells shed from the scalp, but these scaly flakes are larger, thicker or more numerous than normal.

Dandruff flakes can be "dry" or "greasy."

DRY FLAKES

Dry flakes are visible and appear in patches on the horny layer of the scalp. These white, flat flakes come free on their own and are often accompanied by an itchy scalp. They are usually associated with a dry scalp.

Never scratch or try to free the flakes with a comb; this would only exacerbate the situation leading to irritation, accelerating the skin's cell division process.

GREASY FLAKES

Greasy flakes are small, round, yellowish and oily. They stick to the scalp and hair. They form a yellowish, sticky layer and are accompanied by an itchy scalp. This is usually the result of seborrhea (excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands), meaning an oily scalp and hair.

Greasy flakes are formed the same way as dry flakes: cells divide too quickly and collect on the surface of the skin, where they combine with sebum to form clumps.

CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF DANDRUFF

What causes dandruff?

Dandruff is a skin disorder. Cell division in the basal layer of the epidermis occurs too quickly. Cells moving to the skin's surface do not have the time to shed their water and harden. As such, they reach the surface without having adequately dried, resulting in clumps of cells (dandruff) on the scalp.

This disorder can be caused by hormones, inflammation of the scalp (due to poor hygiene, scratching, seborrhea, etc.), intense stress (overactivity), or excessive tobacco use. An unbalanced diet or sleep problems may also result in the appearance of dandruff although this has not been proven. Living in a dry environment, using a hairdryer on a very hot setting, using the wrong shampoo or not rinsing hair properly may also lead to dandruff.

The best weapon to combat dandruff is to use professional products such as anti-dandruff shampoos.

Dandruff provides fertile ground for the propagation of micro-organisms (bacteria, fungus, etc.). Dandruff leads to an itchy scalp, which when scratched results in inflammation. The inflamed skin accelerates cell division resulting in even more cells being pushed to the surface and so a vicious cycle ensues, so to speak.

The condition should be treated immediately before it gets out of hand.

THE TRUTH ABOUT DANDRUFF

MYTH:
"Dandruff can be contracted by sharing combs, hairbrushes or pillows."

FACT:
Dandruff is not caused by a disease or virus and cannot be spread from one person to another. Dandruff flakes found on combs, hairbrushes or pillows are merely dead cells.

MYTH:
"Stress causes dandruff."

FACT:
Although stress may exacerbate the problem, it has never been identified as a sole contributing factor.

MYTH:
"Greasy hair causes dandruff."

FACT:
Greasy hair does not cause dandruff but rather the type of oily secretions or sebum, the body's natural oil. The chemical composition of sebum is notably different in people with dandruff or seborrhea.

MYTH:
"Wearing a hat stimulates dandruff."

FACT:
Wearing a hat, just like sharing a hairbrush or pillow, does not cause or transmit dandruff.

MYTH:
"The best way to fight dandruff is frequent hair washing."

FACT:
No matter how frequently one shampoos their hair, flakes and other dandruff issues cannot be eliminated without first addressing the cause. The best way to eliminate flakes is to use a shampoo specially created to combat dandruff.
